[DL] HELP - Hindrances & Edges

Howdy ya'll,
My Marshal brock. I'm getting ready to start my first Saga in a few weeks and realized I found something I couldn't answer.

And as an FYI, I have almost all of the books, sup, box sets and adventures for Deadlands. I've been reading and learning for about 3 months now, but finally was able to get a group together.

So here's the situation:
In the 1877 PHB (page49) it says "players can take up to 10 points in Hindrances" First question - take 10 points from where? Or are they given ten points to spend if they want.

Then  it says "The points from these can be used to buy Edges (which we'll get to in a little bit) or more Aptitudes."
Second question - where is this mentioned later on? I could n't find it anywhere, can someone give me a page number.

Bottom line here is that I have no idea how many points a PC gets in Hindrances or Edges. Help! Can someone please shed some light on this for me, thanks.
