Well, he was in the group. And he was even drawing some fire. But...and I
guess I'll have to explain a bit further...
Essentially, the Servitor's lifeforce was tied to a girl's nightmares.
There were two options: kill the girl, or "psych" her out of it. A couple
of members of the group were already halfway to psyching her out. They
weren't letting the Templar kill the girl (although it wasted some of their
time having to keep her alive when he was trying to kill her until they ran
far enough away), and the Servitor having that Immunity/All kind of thing
that Servitors typically have, the Temp couldn't do anything to it. Rather
than wait another round or chip in to help himself or draw a bit more fire,
his plan was to step aside and invite it to go off after his comrades.
Now, this was basically a kinda dumb plan, but it wasn't totally 100% clear
she was innocent (kids being subjected to nightmares rarely react rationally
to strangers) and this person plays a rather...stern Templar, shall we say,
who takes a rather narrow view of innocence (and resulting in some of the
party conflicts I've tossed out here for discussion in the past), and a
fairly strong view in keeping himself alive for those who do deserve his
services. Which is a bit extreme, but well within what seems to be the
standards allowed by Simon.
Now the rest of the group succeeded despite his "help," so the repercussions
I would normally lay on (like the Servitor hunting down the dope and killing
him first, or wasting a few hundred people) weren't available. The other
players are (perhaps understandably) somewhat reluctant to kick his
character out over what could be construed as good role-playing. And in a
sense, it was, if you proceed from the player's basic misunderstanding of
the situation. You can't take away Templar Gifts, and Boise is a long way
away even if this were totally out of line for Templar behavior.
But anyhoo, it sounds like SeanMike's is one confirming voice for "screw 'em
over." I'm just kinda curious to know if other folks think the approach I
suggested is too outrageous. I'm sure the player will think so... :)
