To follow up, I did screw up.  I intended to deal out 18 cards to each player (6 different types * 3) but while I shuffled 18 * 8 (players) into the deck, I only dealt out 12 cards to each player.

So, two things:

1) Did we really like having 12 cards in a hand to start?  Or do we want 18 ( in a 6 suit game)?
2) If you count the cards, you see that there was imbalance:

13 blues
19 greens
17 oranges
12 reds
18 whites
17 yellows

Now, this was a bug in the dealing out.  But, is it instead a feature?
