Most definitely, if not in effectiveness then in plain size. Both rounds
(.45 LC and .45 ACP, where LC is Long Colt and fits the revolvers only) are
the same size around and fit the same gun barrels. But the LC is about the
length of your average thumb, while the automatic round is half that, maybe
less. You can get your Ruger .45 revolvers with swappable cylinders that
let you shoot either -- my father has one. Damage potential is the same for
either. Unless you get yourself one of those BFR's (Biggest Finest
Revolver, according to the manufacturer) that shoots tweaked out .45LC. The
powder charge would damage or destroy a normal revolver, but the BFR lets
you hunt big (relatively) game with a pistol. It's OT, but the BFRs also
can be done up in .45-70gvt rifle rounds, .454 Casull, and other
knock-you-on-your-butt-recoil rounds. Add a huge scope(!) on top and it's
every wasters dream... the .45LC version also shoots .410 shotgun shells!
Brought to you by the same folks that build the Desert Eagle pistol with
interchangeable calibers (http://www.magnumresearch.com/old/bfr01.html)

OK, sorry, ramble off now...
