I also think it depends on who the writer is. If you read The Dark Knight
Returns and the current (read: waiting for issue 3) DK2: the Dark Knight
Strikes Again by Frank Miller, who used to write the Punisher, Batman won't
kill criminals, but he WILL allow them to die unless he needs to extract
information from them. I love the tactic he used against one guy where he
has the goon and then it cuts to the next panel, which is all black except
for a speech baloon. In the next panel it's apparent that Batman's hand is
over the guy's eyes as he's pulling it away, and in the next panel his
hand's fully away and you see that he has said goon hanging high above the
city. Damn, I love Batman :) .
