It can be done. Check out http://www.prairienet.org/guns/big/gallery.htm
for a picture of the maadi-giffen .50 BMG pistol.
However is isn't very practical for combat use... one shot, breech loading,
weighs 18 1/2 pounds and has slightly less recoil than a 12 guage shotgun
(meaning you still need 2 hands, even if it is a pistol)

According to one website, the maardi griffen pistol is acurate to 3000
yards.
Of sourse, there is a very big difference between a weapon designed to let
its users fire excessivly large rounds (recoil compensation based on russian
artillary, IIRC) and a chopped down sniper rifle... I agree with you that
that wouldn't work at all well.
One of the NPCs in Cyborgs has a set of .50 BMG pistols.. what sort of stats
do they have?
