Aye - and it's a tactic already proven effective. That's why the core
D20 books (PHB, DMG, MM) sold for $20 each. So that the low price point
can serve as an lead in to the later books that will sell for a higher
price point. I really doubt that the 3.5 edition rulebook are going to be
that cheap. . .
The other thing to look at is in terms of cost-efficiency. To truly get a
decent price per unit, Shane would have to have a freaking butt-load of
books made. Books that have to be paid for up-front. That's money
invested into inventory with a turnover rated in years - meaning a very
slow trickle in as profit.
Now double that trend as there is the Marshal's Handbook to consider.
This way he gets to feed interest in the game which directly turns into
sales for the Marshal's book and quite likely also pushes the splatbooks
and adventures. He does give up that slow profit on the Player's books
which is more than made up in the increased sales of everything else.
Anyway.
I've got the feeling that this ride is far from over.
