And that preselecting is what I'd hate to do.  I'd go from having a 
list to just plain decree (as a GM, I doubt I'd choose this to play 
in the first place), and I'd lose some of the fun of the game, where 
I get to see what nifty things the players can do with stuff that 
doesn't fit the situation.  (My mantra is:  "It is the GM's duty to 
set up the scenario aimed at the PCs' weaknesses.  It is up to the 
players to turn it around to the PCs' strengths.")

That is, of course, if I didn't pick something specifically to do 
that, and then the players would rightfully claim I was picking on 
them.

Now, for an NPC...I'd still shy away from it.  If I want variety, 
I'll throw an Alpha at them... ;)  Although it might be interesting 
as a lone type, rather than an archetype.  Here we have someone who 
almost made alpha, but didn't, and instead has real multiple 
personality problems with his powers.

I couldn't get into the first one, but it was b/c it was a shared 
anthology.  I don't remember much, but I do remember that it changed 
chars from chapter to chapter (author changes) and that bugged me.
