RE: [pyrnet] Training?/Horses, dogs

I have such tremendous respect for those who can deal with
rescue horses. My sister brought home an old mare (the vet
said she was the oldest horse he ever saw- his guess was
around 40). The horse was about half the weight she should
have been. Has no teeth, could barely walk and was very
mistrustful of anyone. My wonderful sister gave this horse
all the mental and physical care and love (which was also a
wonderful lesson for my 9yr old niece). Annie is now the
old matriarch of the farm. She lives with the llamas (she
loves it) because the other horses pick on her too much-
this way, she gets to be "alpha mare". What a wonderful
story. I know that when Annie's time comes, the last few
years of her life were wonderful. Who knows who she was in
her younger years. My sister's trainer seems to think Annie
has a lost look in her eye, like she's looking for a little
girl who used to love her and ride her bareback through the
fields... What brings a horse, or any animal to this point.
WHO could let something like this happen to an animal? It
truly breaks my heart. Sorry, I'll shut up now.
Sue

In my case, I could no longer afford horses, so I opted for
large
dogs instead. <G> Perhaps someday i will rejoin the horse
world.
I do miss it. Especially working with those who had been
owned by
'the less than enlightened and caring'. I got a great deal
of
satisfaction out of bringing around those who had lost their
sense of trust, and turning them back into the loving,
confident
and trustworthy saddle horses they were meant to be all
along.
LOTS of patience and positive reinforcement. Only had one
that
could not be brought around and had to be euthed as he was a
dangerous animal. A product of some really severe abuse and
neglect. Very probably brain damaged as well.
