I use the rolled leather type collar. It sits invisibly under the ruff, with the buckle usually hanging on the chest with the tags.

I had some issues with matting under the collar when my guys were puppies, but after the first coat blow, when they got their adult coats (which are much coarser), I've never seen much matting.  They wear them 24 hrs a day/seven days a week.

Take care to get a naturally oiled one and not dyed red, green, mahogany or otherwise.  It WILL stain the fur no matter what the distributor might say!

You can get them through most cataloges for about $11-$12.  (twice that at most pet stores)
