I recall some B-scifi movie where they used shotguns in space. The
justification were that shotguns were the ideal (cheap) projectile weapon
to use because they were so "inefficient", they allow a lot of gas to
escape (and so don't cause a lot of blow-back) and they are un-rifled so
the pivoting problem occured to a less extent.

Having fired a shotgun (and had a sore-shoulder) I would argue with the
less blow-back theory, but the un-rifling seems to make sense.
