Re: [HOE] MPH/pace Questions
I started to answer this question, but then had to go downstairs and
run this week's adventure. (Smart posse! They got through
"Leftovers" in a single session! Not like the six sessions it took
them to do Hell or High Water.) Now I see it's mostly settled.
Still, people are making the math hard. It's simple, although the
vehicle speed chart on the main rulebook "gear" page is rounded off,
and not even in what I consider the simplest direction.
1 mph = 1760/3600 yard/sec
= 8800/3600 yard/round (1 round = 5 sec)
= 2.4444... yard/round
or
10 mph = 24.444... yard/round
The rule book has implicity rounded this to set 10 mph ~= pace 24.
I would have thought 10 mph ~= pace 25 was simpler, even though
slightly less accurate.
I haven't read Road Warriors, but the flying rules in Iron Oasis have
aircraft moving a nice, uniform once per second, so it takes five of
those phases to equal a round.
So you see that a d12 nimbless lets you run indefinitely at 2x12=24
yards per round, or about 10 mph. Real world sprinters can do
better, for a short while, and so can fast DL/HOE characters, by
pickin' up the pace and using wind. The best real world marathoners
do, what, 12 to 13 mph for about two hours? Not far off.
