Not quite. On page 44 it says that toxic shamans don't have to perform
deeds (read: pollute) to enlist their guardians' aid. Either way, the
guardian still gets something out of the deal; corrupters pollute naturally
and caretakers feed the guardian pollution. Only those who AREN'T shamans
that have acquired a toxic guardian really need to pollute a whole lot to
keep the spirit in tow (since those kinds of people don't usually have
spiffy magical means of appeasing the spirits).
