There, there.  You're not alone in the world...  Remeber, the Soldier edge is only for veteran soldiers who've spend more than 10 years in the armed forces.  And the ability to get tons of military equipment to start with shouldn't be underrated in a setting like HoE.  As for having to take the Rank edge, all you're doing is basically buying leadership with some extra perks.
