Re: [HOE] Faith and Protection

Da Baron brings up another good point, and one which I thought I was the
only one that remembered it. One of the unfortunate carry-overs that the
Storyteller system has brought on roleplaying in general, in addition to
people saying "botch" instead of "go bust,' is the idea that special
powers granted by faith are the result in belief, and not by an
intervening hand. In the Storyteller system, this means that anyone
insane enough to have an undying faith to their shoe can get powers from
it.
However, in Deadlands, Blessed powers are caused by the particular diety
intervening. The librarians don't believe in a deity, and neither do the
Templars. They have faith in ideals, causes and concepts, but there's
not a Big Librarian In The Sky helping out all the little shusshers on
the ground.
Now, Fire & Brimstone says that people who have Faith in religion X gain
miracle/gift Y for free. Since there's nothing that says when X equals
Templar, Doomsayer or Librarian, Y equals Protection, I'd give that a big
No in my game, and I'd reccommend that any other Marshal do the same.
I'd imagine that if you asked a Doomsayer what gift The Glow gives to its
believers, they'd say that the mutation is it. Templars would say that
just thinking one way doesn't prove anything, and you have to get off
your ass and prove yourself to the Martyrs to get any payback. I don't
know what a Librarian would say, other than, "please don't take my lunch
money, Mr Big Bad Bully."
