IMO, I don't see that the order would disapprove of such things per se.  
However, the Templars seem to prefer self-sufficiency.  Given all the other 
stuff the Saints "give" them in the way of Gifts that make them 
self-sufficient (i.e., Armor of the Saints so they don't need to rely on 
armor), giving such a gift as I posted seems reasonable and appropro.

Besides, who wants to deal with Reliability checks?  :)
