Most Templars use swords out of that they look cool, and some probably have 
Simon-Envy. The order is smart enough to see that that a Plasma Blade which 
slices through heavy metal(AV 4) and melts the weapons of their opponents, or 
other high-powered hand weapons are more than just useful. Also, there's a 
relic listed in Junkman Cometh-Vicker's Saber- that makes it pretty clear to 
me that Templars can use energy swords and such.
