Now that I think about it, I agree with you.  The more collateral damage, the better.

I've only once seen a bust on 5d12, and it wasn't for an arcane power.

This would be easy to implement, though a bit tricky to retro-fit for existing
characters.

What about some sort of roll to determine how long the mutation lasts?  Even better
would be a table for backlash similar to the brainburn table, the glowburn table.

Then you just need to work out how to bring about more failures.Draw a card when the
miracle is cast, Red joker gives an extra raise, black joker gives backlash?  When
re-rolling aces, if a majority of re-rolled dice come up 1 it counts as a backlash,
but still gets cast?  The frequency it comes up would determine how nasty to make the
glowburn table.
