In The Last Crusaders it's mentioned (very briefly) how many young people
buy post-war made soda because they hear stories about it from those who
were around before civilization crumbled.  Perhaps the high value of soda
comes from all the young-ens willing to blow all their "money"
(salvage/bullets/you know what I mean) so they can drink soda just like
their moms and dads did.  I can hear the parents' stories now: 

Parent:  Back in my day, we could just stick some coins in a vending
machine to get sodas, instead of scavenging in ruins for them.

Child 1:  What's a vending machine?

Child 2:  What are coins?

Parent:  God, I feel old.
