Here's a good site that gives a real brief overview of Vegas history.
http://www.lvol.com/lvoleg/hist/lvhist.html

They gloss over quite a bit of the colorful history of Vegas. The once
incredible influence of the mobs is not mentioned, nor is the fact that if
it wasn't for gambling the city would have dried up when the rail lines
stopped needing to go through.

Or that the Mormon presence was a blessing because the casino owners could
trust them as pit bosses and in sensitive areas.

Nor does it go into a lot of the darker aspects of the city. It doesn't go
into the skim at all, nor does it mention that Louis Armstrong and other
black entertainers of the time had to leave the casino by the servant's
entrance.

It doesn't talk about the Rat Pack at all....

Or Hoover Dam. And the fact that water is nature's trump card out here in
the desert. One thing the CotA didn't mention (at least I didn't catch it)
is the critical nature of water in the area. (The artesian wells had
trouble keeping up in the early 1900's)

Or Elvis. [Why are we proud of Elvis, well, in a bit it was because when
his career was on the skids he went to Vegas and rose anew. In a way, we
took him in (for a hefty percentage) when no one else would. And besides,
things like the Flying Elvis's are FUN.]

But, aside from that, it's a pretty decent start.. :-)
