Ah well- everyone knows that I start off my day with a heaping pipeful of
crack (it aids the digestion, don't you know...)
But, on a related topic (and one semi-releveant to DL/HoE) for a GREAT
book on the "secret history" of Vegas (and the mystical evolution and
import of the tarot and playing cards in general, and the game of Poker in
particular) I urge everyone to read LAST CALL by Tim Powers. It picked up
a Locus award and the World Fantasy Award, so you don't have to just take
my word for it, peering myopically through my pipe fumes.
Another great book that most likely no-one besides me and the author
knows about is DRY WATER by Eric Nylund. Set in New Mexico, it has a VERY
Deadlands feel to it, even though it's a contemporary story (with some bits
of time travel as warring sorcerors dip into the River of Time to try and
get the drop on each other). It has the ghost of a notorious bandit
tagging along with the protagonist (even posesses him at one point), an
indian Shaman trying to protect his people from an undead sorceror, and a
ton of other good stuff. It deals a lot with a Deadlands era past (through
the eyes of the ghost), but I mined it for a bunch of great HoE senario
ideas.
