A quick note on the historical Templars:  The Church was not the primary
mover in their destruction -- it was the King of France who was in debt to
them and who lured Jaques de Molay from Cyprus (I think) to a conference on
the new Crusade to retake the Holy Land/Outremer.  de Molay had been hitting
up the kings of Europe for a long time about a new crusade.  While the
Knights Templar did function as a bank (in a world which did not have
international banking) they were still primarily a fighting order.
