You're forgetting that Simon Mercer was a Freemason before the Last War. There
is a lot of speculation that whatever Templars escaped the Inquisition became
Freemasons. So its possible that a lot of the ancient rituals and traditions
of the Knights Templar survive as secret Freemason rituals (the Freemasons, of
course, are obviously tight-lipped about it). I'm not saying Simon Mercer
knew anything about this, but enough Freemasons might have survived to
preserve any secret ancient (although admittedly unlikely) connection. The
Rosicrucians also got mixed up in the whole Templar/Freemasonry business, too.
It's all a mess when you start getting into the whole conspiracy theory stuff,
but it COULD be true. =)

Hmm. I wonder if Simon Mercer looks anything like Adam Weishaupt/George
Washington...
