RE: [DL] Stone, D20, and related stuff{Spoilers}

Truth be told, I had a similar beef with the D20 Call of Cthulhu - my
personal opinion was that certain aspects of the original system that made
it interesting were lose in the conversion. However, to each their own...
my experience is that D20 versions appeal to different sorts of gamers than
the original versions do, and from a marketing standpoint, that's probably a
good thing. It means more people buying Deadlands, which is more revenue
for the company, after all.

Part of the problem I think stems from an often overlooked "rule" that made
it's way into the D20 system in general all the way from it's roots in old
school Dungeons and Dragons:

"The [DM/GM/Ref/Marshal, etc.]'s word is law... don't like a rule, throw it
out."

Marshal: "Stone gets up out of the crater left by the explosion and begins
walking the 3 miles to the edge to climb out."

Posse: "What? How the Hell could he have survived that?"

Marshal: "How? That's easy... because I said so."

Not stylish, and an example a bit more extreme than an approach I would
personally resort to, but it illustrates the point. Bottom line, the
Marshal makes the rules and the books are just the guides.

And people wonder why I despise the D20 version of Deadlands...
When you stat *everything* it kinda takes the fun away from the game now
doesn't it.
