I think it works.

But given the additional disadvantages (Reliability, availability, 
fragility, etc) you could probably cut the cost of associating a power to 3.

I would also not limit your self to just backlash results.  There are 
reversed potions, super powerful effects, mixed effects, etc.

:-)

You know.  Altogether this could be a cool thing for an Epitaph article.
