True.  But to me this is an exception rather than the norm.  More often than
not, the group of characters have a common goal.  Certainly not always, but
in those situations where characters have differing or conflicting agendas,
withholding information fits with the story.  (And generally makes it more
interesting.)  However, I was speaking to the "generalized" group who are
"all for one, and one for all" not sharing information.  *Especially* the
tidbit which moves the story along!
