How about: "make a cognition check" 
<successful roll>

"they've got dynamite!"
or
"oh #$*!, is that a gattling?!"

or you could try a smarts check to realize they're outgunned.  
Good luck though, seems a harsh possibility that railroading will lead to pc death, which is very frustrating in a newly started campaign.
