The Defiants book, p. 83, says "If any part of the hero's body is ever
pulped by direct physical damage of any kind, it automatically detonates."
This can imply that blasts and lasers and such do not trigger it but it
doesn't say so directly.  That would help balance it Bombers a little, but I
still think they're, um, how to put this delicately, uh, not one of the
better power packages available.
