Dear Patty,
It sounds like you are trying to do the right
things both for the baby and for Cameron. What a tough spot to be in
because you are honoring the contract. A less careful person would have
just taken the dog to a local shelter.
As Judith suggests maybe transport can be arranged
- this email group has sometimes posted requests for rides that do seem to
get filled.
Several years ago I had a safety issue with a large
parrot who I adopted before my son was born and the SPCA
took the parrot back as soon as I explained the issue, even though I was willing
to keep them separated while they looked for a new home for the bird. They
did not want to have any risk to a toddler. I am surprised that the
Houston rescue group will not allow Cameron to go to another rescue organization
since your son's health is at risk.
Amy, with Charlie and Sweetie in New
Hampshire.

Subject: [pyrnet] Rescue Contract
Question
Hi, all. I hardly ever post to this site, and mostly just read the
valuable information, but have found myself in a dilemma and need some
advice. We adopted our pyr over 13 months ago and just love him to
pieces. However, we had a new baby this past January and he is having a
problem with the dog dander/hair. I've had to rush the baby to the ER
because he was having trouble breathing. The doctors have advised me to
keep the dog out of the house and away from my newest son. We don't
think that our Cameron will be happy as a full time outside dog, so we
contacted the rescue for help. The rescue wants us to transport back to
Houston where we got him (we are in El Paso). This would be a very
expensive trip, as we have one vehicle and cannot possibly put the dog in it
with the baby. So, bottom line would be to rent a car, drive to Houston,
get hotel and drive back next day. I wondered if I could find a home for
"our! " dog here. The contract does state that I should return the dog
to the rescue if something does not work out, but how long is that contract
valid? There is not a single line that says it is valid for the
remainder of the dog's life. I understand they are only looking to make
sure the dog is going to an approved home, and I commend them for that, but
when does the dog become mine to do with what I see best for him? I
offered to surrender him to a closer Pyr rescue (still 4 hrs away), but
they did not agree to this. The contract also states that I agree as the
adopter to forever relieve the rescue of any liability caused by Cameron, but
it does not clearly state that I am forever contractually obligated to return
the dog to them, no matter where we are located. I want to make sure we
are doing the right thing, but at the same time, I want to make sure that I am
not spending a fortune when it is not necessary. We are devastated that
we! cannot keep our Cameron, but it's not like our son is just getting a rash,
he cannot breathe well around Cam. Please let me know if anyone out
there has any suggestions.
Patty
