Toward summer, I will probably have my 7 year old spayed bitch shaved.  The
local technical collage has a grooming department, and they do a wonderful
job.  I've done this for several years now, and so far I've never had any
problems.  Do keep them out of intense sun as they will sunburn.  Also,
this time of the year, it's awfully cold without their coat, so make sure
they don't get too cold.
