RE: [pyrnet] help needed right away

One method...

I know when we trained our Schipperke, Baxter not to run out the door we
simply put a VERY lightweight rope or leash attached to his choke chain
collar. The leash/rope has to be long enough that the dog doesn't know
you're holding it and light enough they can't feel the weight of it. The
leash/rope also has to be held at a distance far enough from the door that
the dog doesn't realize you're holding a leash and also check the length of
the leash/rope to make sure when the dog hits the end of it he's not quite
to the door. We then had someone open the door and when he took off he was
corrected before he made it out the door and with the leash/rope long enough
he didn't realize he was corrected by a person. After a couple times he was
cured of running out the door without permission. We had to use this method
because we lived on a very busy street and any lighter of a correction he
would have ignored. This method also works if you're training by yourself.
You just have to find something to tie the leash/rope to that the dog won't
haul out the door with it. I'm sure there are other methods, but this one
was taught to me by my trainer years ago and has worked very well for me
over the years. It works especially well if someone is entering from
outside.

You have to make sure you tell him what a good dog he is for "waiting" or
whatever word you use for him not racing out the door.

Subject: [pyrnet] help needed right away

Hi Everyone,
We just adopted a very sweet 2 year old (approx) male
pyr named Baxter and have a problem we need help with
right away.
For some reason Baxter is intent on getting out of the
house by squeezing through the door when someone is
coming in/out. He is very fast, much faster than my
female pyr Mandy.
He dashes out and takes off and thank god we have
found him before a car has.
I don't want him to live in a crate, but I can't have
have him doing this.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am also going to
call the rescue group we adopted him from to see if
they can help.
thanks for your help,
Kelly
