I feel for your loss, we have a coyote problem here too. Where do you live?
I'm in NY.
 Ten years ago there weren't many around, but now they are abundant.  The
coyotes are very brazen and came very close to my house last winter. This
summer I heard them constantly, but they stayed more in the woods. I'm
hoping that we can control them this winter.  My husband has a coyote call
that he uses to try to hunt them.

I have goats that I need to protect.  I just got 2 pyrs recently, I'm hoping
that they will work out.  They seem to like the goats.  They sleep in
doghouses in their pasture.  I'm hoping that natural instinct will take over
if coyotes come around.  I know that coyotes must know they are here, the
one dog never stops barking.  The other night she heard a deer and went
nuts.  Barked hysterically and kept banging on the fence.  Oh well, it must
have a been a marauding deer.....
