Please let me know what part of the country you live in SB13569.
I don't leave my dogs out when we are not here, but if I am downstairs in
the basement office I won't always hear the dogs barking.  Maude and Zack
don't let chipmonks in the yard without heralding their presence.  Strangers
don't get near them -- but... you never know.
