I am truly confused and saddened by this whole discussion. I was considering
getting into rescue. But since there is no a "local club" for me to support,
since there are no local mentors to teach skills, since I knew nothing about
rescue until I learned of it from the "internet" I guess I would not be
"acceptable" as a rescue person. I guess I don't understand . . . :-( sad.

Oh my, there are rescue people who work with the GPCA in many areas where
there is not established "club" rescue. The MO/IA midwest group just dealt
with about 15 dogs taken in a "raid". No local club underpins these people.
The GPCA and its national rescue coordinator Kathy Liles
gpcaresq@pacifier.com does. You'd be surprised how many mentors there are
to help and support you. You only have to ask for help and be open to
learning from them and their experience. If you really want to do rescue
start by contacting Kathy and telling her where you are and asking her if
she can suggest some people you could work with. Try contacting a group like
Great Pyrenees Rescue of Northern California (you can contact them at
http://www.gprnc.org/index.htm) and have a look at the kind of things they
do and the kind of information and resources they have and use. Also from
this link go to the GPCC Library and you will find quite a number of
articles on rescue (and a ton of other interesting stuff too).
The first step to doing rescue is the wish and willingness to do it. As you
may have gathered from this discussion, willing volunteers and especially
foster homes are very much needed.
