The list has been talking about one that is probably dominant, sub-
aortic stenosis, and possibly it's dominant w/modifiers or limited
penetrance. The research results haven't been announced yet in
the research that newfs are involved in on mode of inheritance so
until then have to go on dominant. In Bouviers, another research
project, it's thought to be recessive but are making allowances in
case it's dominant with limited penetrance.
Which should make it easy to get it out except for one thing we
come across dogs that clear heart checks, dopplers, and upon
post mortem found to have SAS in newfs. It's the subclinical ones
that get through, so who do you pull from a breeding program. In
newfs it's thought there's not an unaffected line. And a dog with
mild disease does not necessarily throw the same, mild can throw
severes, the drop down dead cases.
I've got a newf here who both parents cleared heart checks, she
cleared her 10 week heart check for SAS, dopplered. She was
pulled from a breeding program because of another heart problem
but has a good long term prognosis and I have her to show her.
She didn't clear her 1 yr old heart check from SAS, but still has a
good long term prognosis.
The affected dogs and questionable ones you do have to pull out of
any breeding program. The others you do the best you can until a
marker is found.
And some of the other heart valve problems are not dominant, but
probably polygenic. These usually hit a dog when older but in
some breeds have turned out to be problems and are still genetic
based, mitral valve regurgitation, tricuspid valve regurgitation, etc.
