Like many others, my boy loves to go for walks more
than just about anything else, including treats.  I
put a flat nylon collar on him while he is in the
house, makes for a nice handle when necessary. 
However, whenever I take him out for a walk I put on
his "metal" collar.  I keep this near the door and
when he hears it rattle he just comes a running.  When
he's been able to wander out the door, I just have to
shake his collar and he will run back knowing that we
will be going for walk.  The important thing to insure
that this behavior will continue is to always follow
through with the walk, even if it's just around the
yard.  Good luck!
