[PyrNet-L] my dog george
I was hoping someone might have a bit of advice for me regarding my almost
four year old pyr. His name is George and I adopted him one year ago from a
family that moved out and left him home alone. He stayed in an empty house
for four months and was fed and let out once a day. The family didn't want
to give him to a shelter because he is a pure bred (I can't figure that one
out either) so they decided to have him put to sleep. I heard about this
through a friend of a friend and agreed to adopt him without meeting him.
He was 20 pounds underweight and a bit aggressive when he was delivered to
my doorstep. One year later, he has regained 10 of the 20 pounds and is a
great dog. He is well adjusted, lets me poke and prod him and allows me to
inspect his food. He is protective now, but I wouldn't call him aggressive.
Following the advice of many books I have him sleep on the floor of my
bedroom next to my bed. If, for any reason, he is able to get out of the
bedroom during the night he will go to the livingroom and urinate on the
carpet. He does not do this during the day or any other time when he is
alone at home. He does not want to get out of the bedroom at night either,
this only happens if the door is somehow ajar and he can open it with his
nose. It has happened about 4 or 5 times in the past year and the only
happens during the night. In the morning I walk him to the spot and tell
him he is bad, take him outside, bring him in to the spot, tell him he is
bad again, and make him lay in another room while I clean up with soap,
then vinegar and water. I cannot figure this one out. Other than this
specific problem, he is pretty mindful for a pyr, he actually comes when
called and I always pet him when he comes. He is 80% responsive with "heel"
and 80% responsive with "quiet".
Has anyone else had this problem or some advice about what to do?
