He's coat looks horrible, so I'm looking for a affordable groomer to help me get started. The mats are only on his hind hair. Any suggestions. If I may ask...what would you consider to be an affordable groomer? I co-own a grooming shop and doggie boutique. We do Pyrs and they begin at about 50.00 and go up from there depending on the condition of the coat. That price includes a conditioning bath, hand drying, complete pedicure and a bandanna.
As far as home suggestions...get yourself a good slicker, a rotating pin comb, a comb, a pin comb/brush and begin in one spot...work on the trouble spots little by little several times a day or as much as the dog can/will handle. Whatever you do, don't bathe the dog with the mats in the hair! That sets the mats and could cause hot spots due to the fact that the skin will not dry out completely under the matted hair.
Luckily Willow loves to be brushed so she and I sit on the floor while watching TV and she grins and cuddles while I groom her each evening...Her coat literally glistens in the sun!
