For one reason or another not all animals "deserve" respect. They've got to earn it.

I've never had a problem with my dogs either. But I'll be darned if I'm going to sit on the floor 
and "explain" to them why they can't bite me or dig in the trash. They *are dogs after all, the 
only "reason" they need is "because I said so".
How do you know she understands?
