In pondering this more, I think all games should do the latter. If players play for second place it's a different game. Take mhearts or spades. There are times where one could make a play that keeps the game going but ruins your chance for second place:
like, taking that QS so the person with 90 points doesn't go over.
What the "perudo scoring" above does solve is the variable number of players. If karen beats camb at perudo 6 times, and Eric beats 5 others 2 times, didn't Eric do better?
