[pbmserv-dev] Fwd: Stymie error

There are problems in the error handling code in Stymie. When I do "Stymie show barticus active" or "All show barticus active" I get a message like this:

X-Originating-IP: [209.152.174.160]

This situation was brought on when I tried an invalid move. In Stymie game 107, I had reached a point where Schep had won. But I realized that if Cameron had misinterpreted the triple move rule, there was a move that would keep the game going. So I tried to move J10,K9,K7. This is a square and two octagons, but one of the octagons (K7) is not adjacent to the square (J10). I didn't want to cheat. Well I wanted to cheat, but I wasn't trying to cheat. Well I was trying to cheat, but I was doing this to test the program.

I sent three commands in a multiple like this:

Stymie Board 106 barticus pw i11,h10
Stymie Board 107 barticus pw j10,k9,k7
If this move succeeds, it means Cameron misinterpreted the rule the
way I meant it. This should not be a legal move.
all show barticus next

I got the response to 106 right away. I got no response for 107. I kept checking email again and again and again. I guesses that I had crashed Stymie, and was going to send Richard an email letting him know. I was hoping I hadn't crashed his email. But then I thought maybe it was just a lost email, so I tried "Stymie show barticus active". After about two minutes of no response, I was wondering if I had crashed just Stymie or all of the games, so I tried "Stymie show barticus active". Within a minute I got responses from both Quoridor and Stymie. I was relieved that Quoridor was up and surprised that Stymie was up. (Richard, did you have to reboot something?)

But I should not be getting this Stymie error email in response to "Stymie show barticus active". Furthermore, the email I eventually got with the subject "Stymie Board 107 Error" did not show the current board position, did not show my erroneous move, and had the non-helpful message "Please enter move as column (A-O) and row (1-15)". The message should be something like "The square at J10 is not adjacent to the octagon at K7", or at least "The square must be adjacent to the octagon".

I don't mean to rag on Cameron here. I appreciate that he programmed my game. I am just helping to debug the program.

I am leaving game 107 in its current state to allow Cameron, Richard, or anyone else the opportunity to analyze the situation. Then I will resign.
