[HOE] Techno Wizardry: New Junker Hexes
Just some stuff I've been playing around with recently. Hexes are
exceedingly hard to pull off in Hell On Earth, but I figured some folks
would still be using 'em. Even if they'd found better spirits to mess
around with...
Techno Wizardry
Not all Junkers have given up the way of the Huckster. Some still cling to
their old Hexes for the slight edge they can garner from them, even in the
face of the increased difficulty in realizing their power. A rare few even
continue to refine their technique, melding Hexslinging with the demands of
the Junker discipline. These are a few new Hexes for Junkers willing to
gamble at a fixed table. Note that these Hexes are built for those with
both AB: Huckster and AB: Junker. They will be of little use to Hucksters
without the Junker Arcane Background.
Micronization
Trait: Spirit
Hand: Ace
Speed: 5 minutes
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch
Miniaturize is an oft-times vital tool trick, but sometimes a Junker needs
something better. Using this Hex, a Junker can compress a tech spirit into
an even smaller construction than Miniaturize usually allows. Each hand on
this Hex decreases the amount of slots that the power needs, as follows:
Hand Reduction
Ace 10%
Pair 20%
Two Pairs 30%
Three of a Kind 40%
Straight 50%
Flush 60%
Full House 70%
Four of a Kind 80%
Straight Flush 90%
Royal Flush* 95%
* on a Royal Flush, the power may fit into a single slot or be reduced by
95% of the needed space, whichever is better!
If the Huckster should Backlash, not only will they suffer the normal
effects of backlash, but the power fails to be installed into the device.
You cannot use this Hex in conjunction with the Miniaturize tool trick on
the same power.
Tech Aegis
Trait: Spirit
Hand: Pair
Speed: 1
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch
Sometimes, a techno-wizard wishes to cull favor with the spirit world. With
a little risk and a tussle with a manitou, she can sometimes do just that.
By touching any man-made item and casting this Hex, the techno-wizard grabs
a manitou and forces it to guard the tech spirit housed within. This has no
obvious immediate effect, however when the item is destroyed and the tech
spirit is released, the manitou throws itself into a furious fight with the
waiting nature spirits. This gives the tech spirit enough time to slip away
into the Net, even in areas largely devoid of technology. Needless to say,
tech spirits who benefit from this form of protection are well-disposed to
the techno-wizard who shielded them in the first place. They’re willing to
make an extra effort when settling into a junker device that the
techno-wizard has provided for them.
Each man-made item has a tech spirit housed inside of it. A bomb would have
a gun spirit, a bicycle would have a car spirit, a comb would have an
appliance spirit, etc. After the item is destroyed, the Junker may install
a power associated with the spirit released by a shielded item once and
receives a bonus to the Stability of that item equal to +2 and an additional
+2 for every hand above the minimum achieved on the Hex. Each spirit so
rescued, so long as they are not damaged goods, counts as a highly reliable
device for the purpose of attracting browser spirits.
If the spirit turns out to be damaged goods or the Junker fails to install
the spirit into the device (such as going bust on the Miniaturize tool
trick), she may not try again with that spirit and will not gain the bonus
from the Hex. Also, you can not personally destroy a device containing an
Aegis’d spirit to release that spirit and gain the benefits of this Hex.
Doing so just gives you a broken piece of technology. Spirits would much
rather stay in their proper homes, not be ousted so Junkers can have them
strain to keep their items together. Having a friend of yours break the
item or otherwise being slick about it might work once or twice, but tech
spirits are savvy and will soon catch on.
Example: Arthur Bentling, Junker and Huckster, comes across an old ballistic
vest when scrounging around outside the ruins of Shan Fan. Besides wearing
it, he also decides to cull some favor with the Armor spirit within and
casts Tech Aegis. He draws Two Pair when casting the Hex and luckily avoids
backlash in the manitou-infested wasteland. Should the vest ever be shot up
enough that it is destroyed, Bentling will garner some valuable esteem with
the Tech Spirits (+1 to his good device total for attracting Browser
Spirits) and the next time he wishes to install the Armor power into a
device, he will get a +4 to the device’s final Stability total!
