Or you could be super dev'lish and say it's his trusty
whatever, his pistol, his hat, anything. The truth o'
the matter is he's harrowed but doesn't know it and
has deathmask so he fools even himself. Or connect the
deathmask to the item so it actually is a relic. Then
whenever he is without the item he appears to rapidly
rot and whatnot, though it's just the deathmask
wearing off.
