Yes, I've noticed in most RPGs I've run that whenever I have a NPC as part
of the party, they usually get made fun of or used as cannon fodder. In the
early days of D&D it was easier to accept any additional NPCs as part of the
party (men-at-arms, hirelings, etc.). However now that players are more
confident about their characters, they no longer see any need for these
'training wheel' party members.
