There's a story in the third book of the Deadlands short story
collection where a huckster goes to "hell" (the Hunting Grounds).  He
finds that he doesn't have to face a manitou at all, just "open himself
to the power floating about" and he can cast.

Obviously, it's not necessarily true, but it's one way to look at it
(and a good story, too).
