Man, a couple years ago this guy on the Shadowrun mailing list sent a link
to page that had this long report on it. Basically it was about this group
of 5 under-cover cops that were sent out into the southern deserts of
California to try and infiltrate and stop border jumping groups and
individuals. Because of the generally desperate nature of people trying to
get across the border these cops saw more "action" than most precincts
ever do. It was pretty long and meaty on the numbers, but the general gist
was that most all of the gunfights that occured took place in poor
lighting and at less than 20 feet. Using pistols and a shotgun the cops
fired an un-godly number of rounds, had their lives saved by their vests
an insane number of time and had a hit ratio of about 20:1 (20 misses to 1
hit). It was about the only article I ever found that gave a "realistic"
picture of what a modern gunfight would be like. I really wish I'd saved
it.
