RE: [HOE] Hell or Highwater (Slight Spoiler)

You know, one thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that the Gators have the home field advantage.  Play up the fact that your posse isn’t familiar with the bayou.  The Gators may have archaic weapons, but with good guerilla tactics, they can be scary.  Check out the stories of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox of the Revolutionary War, and part of the inspiration for the character in “The Patriot.”

Give all the Gators a 3 pt. Edge called Bayou Boy that provides unimpeded movement in swampland and a +2 bonus to Sneak, Survival, and Trackin’ in the same territory.

Then besides outmaneuvering the posse, make sure the Gators use these skills to soften them up.  Example:

After their first meeting with the posse, the Gators scatter to four winds, using their Sneak modifier and movement to escape the posse.  Realizing how tough they are, teams are sent out, using Trackin’ and Survival, to find the lair (or lairs) of some of the bayou’s nastiest critters.  The Gators take up positions to snipe around the critter’s lair, and then a small group goes, attacks the posse, and gets them to follow them back to the lair.  The small group Sneaks through the lair, but when the posse arrives, one of the snipers fires off a shot to rouse the critter (or critters).  While the posse fights the critters, the Gators take potshots with their muskets.  When the posse starts to win, the Gators ghost back into the swamp.

If at all possible, they may try to set up more than one critter.  When the posse is trudging back, weary and wounded, from one, the Gators lead them into another.

If there is one thing any PC hates, it’s a cunning enemy.  ;-)

"You smell that? Do you smell that? ...Ghost Rock, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of ghost rock in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' Yank body. The smell, you know that sulphurous smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."
