Okay, I'm not expert, but from how I understand it the reaction when a 
bullet fires is a chemical reaction.  So I belive they will work just fine 
in space. As you pointed out though, Make sure your PCs are tethered to 
something before they shoot at anything or else they might take a long tour 
of the cosmos.
