Remember what the Prospector said about having won until the Reckoners sent
Stone back to kill off the heroes that made the victor possible?  That
suggests to me the future is mutable, so maybe the act of bringing the book
(and the people interacting with the Wierd West folks) back causes a small
change that changes the future slightly, making the book a paradox that
turns gibberish or, as Jeff S suggested, fades?
