I can answer this as well... simply to make money. WotC made D&D3 adaptable
to be able to sell more. PEG made Deadlands d20 (and now HoE d20) to get a
little piece of the action.
Even though the old system is much, much better, I can't really see a reason
to blame them for trying to make money. Getting ends to meet is very hard in
the gaming industry.

To this I agree wholeheartedly - but, it is kind of neat with systems that
'everyone' knows. This is why I use d20 rules for my online Deadlands
games - people already know the d20 rules, thus making things easier for me,
and I can get good players that do not know Deadlands, thus introducing them
to the game. And, so far, several Deadlands-books have been sold due to my
games, making PEG another dime that they so very much deserve.

Please report to the closest termination-center, if you would please. ;)
Okay, if people really want to, but not in MY game, at least.
That being said, the hit point system SUCKS. The various rules, feats and
class abilities to do more damage and instant kills, as well as the wound
thresholds from Way of the Gun fixes it somewhat, but it is still at bit
stupid - but it works at lower levels. At higher levels, it just becomes
stupid. So, my advice is, kill characters before they go beyond level 7-8 or
so. ;)
